Case Study

Network Wiring Solution
for Large Warehouse

Background

A large warehouse facility required comprehensive network wiring throughout the entire building. This presented a unique challenge due to the structure's sheer size and the limitations of standard networking equipment.

The Challenge

The primary obstacle faced in this project was the physical limitation of Cat6 network cables. These cables have a maximum effective length of 330 feet (approximately 100 meters). Given the expansive dimensions of the warehouse, using Cat6 cables alone would not suffice to cover the entire building, potentially leaving some areas without network connectivity.

The Solution

Strategic Placement of Fiber Termination Boxes Three fiber termination boxes were installed at carefully chosen locations throughout the warehouse.

Optimal Coverage The boxes were positioned to ensure that any point within the warehouse was no more than 330 feet away from at least one fiber termination box.

Hybrid Network Architecture This setup allowed fiber optic cabling for long-distance runs and Cat6 cabling for shorter, localized connections.

Implementation

  • The warehouse layout was thoroughly analyzed to determine the optimal locations for the fiber termination boxes.
  • Armored 12-strand multimode fiber optic cables were installed from the central network hub to each of the three termination boxes.
  • Cat6 cables could then be extended from these boxes to any required point within their 330-foot radius.

Impact and Benefits

  • Comprehensive Coverage
The solution ensured that every warehouse area could be reached with a Cat6 network connection, meeting the project's primary objective.
  • Flexibility in Warehouse Layout
By providing network access throughout the building, the business could arrange the warehouse layout based on operational efficiency rather than being constrained by network connection points.
  • Scalability
The hybrid fiber-Cat6 solution allows for easy network expansion or reconfiguration as the warehouse's needs evolve.
  • Future-Proofing
Using a fiber optic backbone provides capacity for future increases in network speed and bandwidth requirements.
  • Cost-Effectiveness
While initially more complex than a standard installation, this solution avoided needing multiple network switches or repeaters throughout the warehouse, potentially reducing long-term costs.
